"Dear John Doe" military condolenses

In a recent unprecedented snafu the U.S. Army sent letters to families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the salutation "Dear John Doe".

The letters have been sent since since 2001 containing information about  services or gifts for which the families may be eligible. The number of letters is reported at 7,000 to families of most of the 3,500 soldiers who lost their lives for their country.
