By now we have all heard of President Obama's Don't do as I do, do as I say on heating and food. I would just like to say, I would like to too. I received my 2nd utility bill from my self imposed cut backs. It was $500. I am cold in my house of 68 degrees most of the day. I am not doing this to save the planet, for I do not believe in the theory of Global Warming or Climate Change. No, I am cutting back to save something else: money. This is what makes Obama's tropical President Barack Obabma's Bahamas temperature Oval office so offensive. He DOES believe in Global Warming. He will promote Cap and Trade and Carbon credits that will raise utility prices across the board. A reader forwarded me the following announcement from the Elmbrook School District regarding the coming candidate forum. (Parents of Elmbrook School students receive these monthly events notices, but residents without children in the district do not.)
Last year, I attended the forum even though each candidate ran unopposed. I found it was still an good opportunity to get a feel for the candidates. This year we have three candidates running for each open seat. The forum on Thursday should help you to get a better idea of where each stands on the issues facing the Elmbrook School District, such as how to solve the challenge of increasing costs without increasing taxes. The primary is coming up fast: Feb. 17th.

It is easy for conservatives to become discouraged. What looked like glimmer of hope last week, with all of the House Republicans and 11 Blue-Dog Democrats soundly rejecting the pork-filled "stimulus" bill in the House, quickly faded on Monday.

If Americans cannot be responsible for making sure their TVs work come Feb. 17th, by getting the digital conversion box, we are hopeless.
A good parent knows they must let their children fail at some things in order to teach them responsibility. The trick is to do it with things that really don't matter. Things that don't have life-long consequences. Isn't this TV conversion a perfect way to teach responsibility?

There is a high chance a majority of the States within the United States of America could file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. There are currently 46 states with high budget deficits, Arizona being one of them.

The alarming news is the State of Arizona has 90 to 120 days before they completely run out of money. After that, all bills and tax refunds owed to the citizens will go unpaid.

Comics, Kings, and Congress
In his prime Mel Brooks was the mad scientist of comedy, and one of two people who could absolutely un-hinge Johnny Carson on the old Tonight Show. I remember one night when Brooks had Carson so helplessly convulsed with laughter, that the show's producers had to cut to commercial to allow Johnny time to compose and re-oxygenate himself.
In Brooks' film The History of the World, he spoofs a variety of characters, including France's Louis XIV. In a scene from the movie Louis flirts with a bevy of court beauties, at one point glancing bemusedly at the camera and claiming, "It's good to be the King".
I Am the Sandwich Generation
I had never heard the term "sandwich generation" until I received a brochure in the mail recently, advertising a series of lectures for people like me -- adults "sandwiched" between raising young children and caring for aging parents. I have a precocious young daughter. I write about her exploits often, and she is one of the joys of my life. I also have an 81-year old father. Last summer, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, just two years after lung cancer claimed my mother.
My dad decided to seek treatment and began chemo just before Thanksgiving last year. The clinic said that he was the oldest patient that they ever had who had chosen to undergo this particular chemo regimen. With every cycle, his white blood cell count would be wiped out, almost to the point of non-existence. He didn't want to eat or drink. It was a battle to get him to take a few bites of his meals. His hair fell out, which left him depressed. Anti-depressants caused him to hallucinate. With each new problem and each new hospitalization, it became more and more apparent that my dad would need to be more closely monitored. So, although my dad was already living with my brother and his family, we decided that it would be best for my dad to move in with me, the stay-at-home offspring, for awhile.
Eighth Grader Alex Siy Wins Scholarship!

Alex Siy, one of our eighth graders, was recently named the winner of the inaugural KnowHowtoGo2College/EdVest Video Contest. Alex, whose video includes an original song composed by him, will receive an EdVest scholarship of $1,000. Alex is an A student and is in a variety of extracurricular activities including basketball, club volleyball, and our school's upcoming musical Beauty and the Beast.
A great way to save money
Is just around the corner - at the Used Book Sale on March 6-8. The three-day sale is hosted by the Friends of Elm Grove Library at 13600 Juneau Blvd. in Elm Grove. This is the Friend's 23rd annual used book sale. But it is now not just books. The sale now includes books in print, on tape and CD, music (on Vinyl, CD and tapes), and DVDs. Admission is free.
The sale starts Friday, March 6 with most items priced at two dollars or less. Paperbacks are just $.50. The sale continues on Saturday, March 7 with a 50% off sale and on Sunday, March 8, items are priced at $4 a grocery bag.
More on Church and State
As has been noted y Brookfield Now, the School District of Elmbrook has informed Americans United for hthe Separation of Church and State that the graduation ceremonies for its two High Schools will, as planned, be held at Elmbrook Church.
As a follow up to the specific issue of potential litigation against our School District over the question of where the people of our community will be "allowed" to hold its graduation ceremonies, I want to explore the larger question of Church and State. Talk of lawsuits and passionate political beliefs is serious stuff, and if we are to debate the Constitutionality of such questions, I believe we should be equally serious about attempting to understand the intent of those who actually wrote that document.
Upcoming Beauty and the Beast
On March 19th and 20th SJV students will be presenting the Broadway Musical, Beauty and the Beast, Junior. Based on the Disney film of the same name, excited actors and actresses, in sixth through eighth grade, will give their best acting debut. They will unveil the capturing, timeless tale of an arrogant prince turned into a beast who is eventually saved by the love of a country girl.
Ooo Ahh Central! (A Lancer Reunion)
My title is the tag line of a BCHS cheer made famous by the Class of 1984, or so I've been told. Although I am a Spartan, I'm doing a favor for some Lancer friends of mine by announcing that the BCHS Class of 1984 is currently planning its 25-year reunion. Although at the time of this post no specific date has been set, the reunion organizers are hoping to schedule the reunion in July or August.

Have You Had Your Paczki Today?
Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, means paczkis to me. I love pazckis. If you've never had one, a paczki is a Polish treat similar to a jelly doughnut that is generally consumed before the start of Lent. Although a prune filling is the traditional choice, I prefer raspberry, liberally sprinkled with powder sugar.
Some of the best pazckis I've had in Brookfield come from the National Bakery on Greenfield and Sunnyslope, but if you can't make it out there, I've seen them at the Sendik's on Brookfield Road and at Grasch's.
Shout Out to Marquette!
I'd like to give a shout out to my old alma mater, Marquette University. If you haven't heard, their basketball team, ranked number 8, is playing a highly-anticipated game tonight against Connecticut, ranked no. 2.
