July 28, 2010 10:30 a.m. | Last week's torrential rains pounded Brookfield, causing dozens of flooding problems and a handful of sewer backups, but the damage was not as significant as a similar rainstorm in June 2008, city officials said.
Public Works Director Tom Grisa said the city received about 3 inches of rain in the first hour of the July 22 storm. That's a quicker pace than was seen in the 2008 storm, but rainfall totals for both storms were about 6 inches.
As of about noon Tuesday, the city had received about 60 calls about problems caused by stormwater flooding and about 18 or so sewer backups, but, Grisa said, there likely are more cases out there.
"We can only count what's reported (to us)," he said.
Still, Grisa said, the number of homes affected was substantially lower this year than in 2008 - 1,300 reports of flooding and backups came in that year. This year, the city did not have far-reaching power outages, and that likely played a part in reducing the overall impact of the storm.

July 26, 2010 4:32 p.m. | Note to all you lovebirds out there:
If you decide to send a risqué picture of yourself to your girlfriend, make sure she doesn't share her cell phone with her mother first.
An 18-year-old Glendale man got in trouble last week after he sent a nude picture of himself to his 17-year-old girlfriend in Brookfield.
The problem is, the girl shares her phone with her mother, who was the one who first saw the picture.
Brookfield cops cited the man for disorderly conduct.

July 26, 2010 3:44 p.m. | A Craigslist posting worked a little too well for some Brookfield residents last week.
A woman came to the City of Brookfield Police Department about 9 p.m. Saturday to report a theft from her home on Elmridge Avenue on the city's southeast side.
According to the Brookfield police report:
The woman said she and her husband had posted an ad on Craigslist announcing they had free chairs to give away, and someone picked up the furniture from the home shortly thereafter.
But the couple did not remove the ad from the site, and the woman later discovered that someone had taken two patio chairs - which weren't the "free chairs" mentioned in the Craigslist ad - from her front porch.

July 16, 2010 6:22 p.m. | The Elmbrook School Board on Tuesday is expected to approve the resignation of Brookfield East High School Principal Brett Bowers.
Bowers, who has been principal at East for five years, has accepted a job as principal at Homestead High School pending the board's action. His last day would be July 30.
In a memo to the board, Superintendent Matt Gibson said he does not recommend recruiting a replacement for Bowers now "given the lateness in the hiring season and available talent within the district."
Gibson said the district could appoint another administrator to become principal at East or could appoint an interim principal for the 2010-11 school year and conduct a normal recruitment process in the second semester.
Gibson will give an update on the district's next step at the meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. at the Central Administration Office, 13780 Hope St.
