Von Maur project moving forward with new partners

Aug. 29, 2013 7:00 a.m. | The Corners shopping center proposed for the Town of Brookfield is moving forward with new partners, including a group tied to Minneapolis-based food conglomerate Cargill Inc.

CarVal Investors LLC, an independent subsidiary of Cargill, would own 80% of The Corners, with Chicago-based real estate investment company M & J Wilkow Ltd. owning 10% and Milwaukee-based hotel and theater operator Marcus Corp. owning 10%, said David Harvey, a Wilkow principal and senior vice president.

Those new partners are helping set the stage for Town Board approval of a long-delayed public financing plan for The Corners.

The development, anchored by a 140,000-square-foot Von Maur department store, would include 243,000 square feet of additional shops and restaurants, and 140 to 150 higher-end apartments on 19 acres east of Barker Road, between I-94 and W. Blue Mound Road.

The developers plan to begin demolition work at that site by December, with plans for The Corners to open in November 2015.

Brookfield Jimmy John's employee arrested after stealing tips

Aug. 20, 2013 8:53 p.m. | A 20-year-old employee at a town of Brookfield Jimmy John's was arrested Aug. 9 after police say he charged $950 worth of fraudulent tips to credit cards and pocketed the cash.

According to the police report:

A detective from the Waukesha Police Department contacted town of Brookfield police to discuss a similar theft and fraud scheme that had taken place at a Jimmy John's in the city of Waukesha. The detective advised that in the scam, an employee would charge a small amount to a prepaid card, usually under $10, and then add a much larger amount as a tip. The employee would then remove the tip amount in cash from the register and keep it.

On seven occasions between July 7 and Aug. 4, documents showed that a Waukesha man working at the town of Brookfield location, 18900 W. Bluemound Road, had been pulling the same trick, taking between $40 and $200 in tips per transaction. A total of $950 was taken from the cash register, all charged as tips, during that time.

The town of Brookfield and city of Waukesha stores are under the same ownership, and received an alert from their credit card company Aug. 2 that what looked like credit card fraud was taking place. After looking through the records, the owners discovered the thefts.

Armed man arrested after tactical situation in Elm Grove

Aug. 08, 2013 7:25 p.m. | A 33-year-old man was arrested Thursday after barricading himself in an Elm Grove apartment building and jumping out of a window as tactical officers tried to diffuse the scene.

Brookfield police Capt. Jim Adlam said the man was alone in his apartment on Dunleith Circle, just north of Elm Grove and Bluemound roads, and showed bizarre behavior, including brandishing a knife when officers arrived. The four-unit apartment complex was immediately evacuated and the standoff ended shorty after 6:30 p.m.

"Waukesha County's Tactical Unit attempted to breach some windows, and at that point the suspect dove out of a window and attempted to flee," Adlam said. "Waukesha County's Sheriff K-9 Unit and tactical officers were in the area and he was quickly taken into custody."

Brookfield police had numerous contacts with the man, Adlam said. They responded to a domestic call at his parents' Brookfield home Thursday morning after the suspect allegedly damaged the garage door and other things inside the house.

The man started a small fire in the apartment, but it's unknown if it was in the fireplace, Adlam said. Smoke was seen coming out of the chimney and a window. Adlam said the man threw his phone out of the window and may have ingested unknown substances during the standoff.
