All 860 students will gather for the annual Thanksgiving assembly at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. The assembly will feature a program of songs, poems and prayer by each of the Academy's students. Following the assembly, school will be in recess in observance of Thanksgiving. Classes resume Nov. 29.
Brookfield Christian School
Brookfield Christian School eighth-graders visited the state Capitol in Madison on Nov. 10 for their Social Studies class. They were able to hear from Rep. Marlin Schneider (D-Wisconsin Rapids), the longest-serving member of the state Assembly in Wisconsin history.
On Friday, students who qualified in the local portion of the Speech and Spelling Competition traveled to Delavan Christian School to compete with fifth- through eighth-grade students from six other schools.
Brookfield East debaters Advik Shreekumar, Aditya Trivedi and Chih-Wei Wu placed in the top 32 teams in the International Public Policy Forum debates, sponsored by Bickel & Brewer Foundation.

More than 330 teams from 36 countries and 42 states registered to compete in the 2010-11 contest. The top 32 teams will now compete in a single-elimination, written debate competition. The teams will volley papers back and forth via e-mail and judges will select the winning team. This format continues until the final eight teams are selected. Those teams win an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to compete in the IPPF Finals, where the champion takes home a $10,000 grand prize.
Parent-teacher conferences at Burleigh will be held tonight and Monday, as well as in the morning and afternoon on Tuesday. Parent-teacher conferences provide the opportunity to exchange information and make any needed adjustments as students and teachers head into the second quarter.
Dixon fourth-graders completed their Wisconsin ABC Booklets, where a topic relating to Wisconsin was researched. Students presented their topic relating to a specific letter (for example, "C" for the cheese industry). The bound books will be available for parents to view at upcoming parent-teacher conferences.
Congratulations to Special Olympics bowlers who have qualified for the state tournament. Qualifiers include Lizzie Heyer, Emily Turkoske, Kelly Macalister, Sonja Potrykus and Lindsey Roedell.
The upper grade students are in the process of making PowerPoint slide shows to use in presentations. The sixth-graders' slide shows are about the biomes they created and displayed in science class. The seventh- and eighth-graders are doing their presentations on U.S. presidents for their history class. They will also be writing research papers to accompany their slide shows.
Pilgrim Park Middle School
Pilgrim Park kicked off its holiday concert season with the eighth-grade Pops concert on Wednesday at the Wilson Center for the Performing Arts. Practice for the school musical and intramural volleyball are also in full swing. Meanwhile, parent-teacher conferences will be held today, Monday and Tuesday.
The eighth-grade boys volleyball Black team won the 2010 Elizabeth Ann Seton Volleyball Tournament. Congratulations to Ryan Chaffee, Ryan Donohue, Jack O'Grady, Josh Schmirler, Aaron Siehr, Sean Thompson, Patrick Vandendriessche, Keegan von Estorff, Michael von Estorff, head coach Al Thompson, coach Tim Donohue and coach Joel Vandendriessche.
The eighth-grade girls team took fourth place in the tournament. The team is coached by Jacqueline Mlsna and Stacy Pink. St. Dominic's was the only school to be represented in the final four in both the girls and boys division.
St. Mary's Visitation
St. Mary's Visitation volleyball teams wrapped up the season with strong tournament showings. The sixth-grade girls Blue team placed second and the White team placed third in the St. Dominic's tournament. The seventh-grade girls A team took first place out of 12 teams in both the St. Mary's Menomonee Falls tournament and the St. Dominic's tournament, while the seventh-grade girls Blue team placed third out of 16 teams in the St. Dominic's tournament in the B League.
The St. Mary's Visitation eighth-grade girls volleyball team received an invite to the Seton Volleyball Tournament on Nov. 2-7. The Seton is an invitational tournament for Catholic grade-school students throughout the Milwaukee Archdiocese. The girls won their first-round game in the B division against a higher-ranked team from St. Charles Hartland, but lost in the second round. In league play, the seventh-grade girls Blue team finished first in the Metro League with a record of 9-1, while the seventh-grade girls Red team placed second in their division.
Swanson Elementary School recognized Veterans Day on Nov. 11. Following the daily Pledge of Allegiance, fifth-grade student Asha Bell read an announcement that she had written highlighting the purpose for recognizing Veterans Day as a federal holiday and honoring all veterans who have served the United States. Fifth-grade band students Cameron Rao, Jennifer Shao, and Sabrina Zhong followed this special announcement by performing patriotic musical selections.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held tonight, Monday and Tuesday.
Tonawanda's Book Fair opened Tuesday. This year's theme is "Here's To Our Heroes: Reading Saves the Day." Tonawanda also welcomes parents for parent-teacher conferences today and Monday.
