Is Mitchell Park sledding hill manmade?
Issue: A reader and his children enjoy sledding down the hill in Mitchell Park, but he is curious about how the hill came to be. He noticed that the hill is surrounded by a flat, swamp-like area and wonders if the hill was manmade.
Status: I spoke with Gary Majeskie, parks and forestry superintendent, and he said the hill was made for the purpose of sledding in 1996. Wirth Park, Wirth Park South and Westchester Park also have hills designated for sledding.
Other parks have hills that can be used for sledding but that have not been designed for that purpose, he added. Those hills are usually used only by neighborhood kids because there isn't parking available nearby.
