Elmbrook to reconsider K4 program for 2014-15
A comprehensive recommendation for implementing a 4-year-old kindergarten program in the Elmbrook School District is set to come before the School Board in the fall, Superintendent Mark Hansen said last week.
If approved, the program would be ready to begin the following school year.
Hansen said the decision to rekindle discussion about the oft-proposed K4 program was made because "it is the right thing to do" in order to complete the district's offerings. He noted that a K4 program would fit into the district's goals of improving literacy and learning.
Reaction among board members is mixed.
Bob Ziegler, a longtime K4 proponent who will be ending his board service in April, said he favors discussing the topic in January. Richard Brunner also favors an earlier discussion, citing a city of Brookfield survey that indicates residents place a high priority on the strength of local public schools.
Some other board members are not supportive of having the discussion in January, but are willing to consider Hansen's plan.
Board member Kathryn Wilson said the issue has been so polarizing that she does not favor renewing the discussion during the upcoming year.
Elmbrook School District going paperless
The Elmbrook School Board last week unanimously agreed to spend no more than $17,000 to help the board convert to a paperless entity by February.
Board member Glen Allgaier, chairman of the Communications Committee, recommended the initiative that requires the district to buy laptops for board members' use, purchase a subscription for needed software and train the board members and others involved to use the system.
The recommendation stated that the change would "promote efficiency and effectiveness in the collection, publishing and distribution of board and committee content."
Preliminary cost analysis indicates that thousands of dollars now spent on paper, copying and labor can be saved.
Paperless board communications systems have been adopted by other districts, including Kettle Moraine, La Crosse and West Bend.
