Brookfield, Elm Grove girls keep up with Kardashians in NYC
East student won Instagram contest through PacSun
To some teenage girls, Kim Kardashian and her sisters are considered pop icons with enviable style. Kardashian and her entire family star in the E! series "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," and, last week, two Brookfield and Elm Grove girls won a shopping trip with Kim's youngest sisters, Kylie and Kendall Jenner.
Nina Bingen, a 16-year-old at Brookfield East High School, won an online Instagram contest through clothing store PacSun and chose her cousin, Brookfield Central graduate Mia LaCroix, 19, to join her on the three-day trip to New York City to shop with the Jenner girls Aug. 5-7. Bingen was one of three winners out of 300,000 national entries. The girls shared their experience of a lifetime and how Kylie and Kendall are when the cameras are off.
Q: How did you hear about the contest?
A: Bingen — "They (PacSun) posted a picture saying 'PacSun takes you shopping with Kendall and Kylie Jenner! To enter, repost this image and #KANDKNYC', so I did so, and two weeks later I got an email saying that I was one of three grand prize winners."
Q: What was your reaction when you found out you had won?
A: Bingen — "When I got the email, I was jumping around filled with excitement and even started crying a little bit. It truly felt like a dream come true, because Kendall and Kylie are my fashion icons and shopping with them was so surreal!"
Q: How did you choose who would come with you on the trip?
A: Bingen — "Right away, I knew taking my cousin Mia would be perfect, because I wouldn't want to spend three days in New York City with anyone else but my best friend!"
Q: Were you nervous about meeting Kylie and Kendall?
A: Bingen — "To be honest, yes I was very nervous! When you dream so big about meeting your fashion icons and all of the sudden you get the chance to, it's almost breathtaking! LaCroix — "I was more excited to see Nina's reactions and how happy she would be more than anything."
Q: What was your first impression of Kylie and Kendall?
A: Bingen — "My first impression was how beautiful they were, and how they looked exactly how they do on TV." LaCroix — "My first impression was 'wow they are so tall!' But otherwise, they were really nice girls."
Q: Did they behave the way viewers see them on the show?
A: Bingen — "They were more quiet than when you see them with their sisters (on TV), but if you think about it, they are only teenagers so they aren't much different around new people then we are. But they were really cool and talked to us like they are normal people, too." LaCroix — "They were definitely more quiet and more reserved than how we see them on the show."
Q: How did it feel to hang out with them?
A: Bingen — "It was surreal just casually talking with them, but it was one of the best moments of my life!" LaCroix — "It was sort of weird because you only see them on the show, so being right next to them was almost like a pinch me moment."
Q: What stuck out most from this trip?
A: Bingen — "The crazy atmosphere in New York! I never wanted to sit down, so to have so much energy to do everything was amazing! But meeting Kendall and Kylie was the best part of the trip!" LaCroix — "That there is a life beyond Wisconsin! And being a crazy tourist in the background of Good Morning, America. I have been obsessed with the show all my life, so being there was amazing."
Q: What else did you do besides shop with the girls?
A: Bingen — "We went to Time Square, Central Park and Strawberry Fields. We did a lot of shopping in SoHo and China Town, toured Kate Spade and were able to see the 9/11 memorial. We also ate a lot of food at some restaurants that we don't have here at home."
Q: How did the trip end?
A: Bingen — "The trip ended with some yummy cupcakes from Cupcakes by Melissa and a realization of how blessed we are to be given this opportunity."
Q: Final thoughts?
A: Bingen — "This trip was honestly the best experience of my life, and its one I will never forget! I got to experience so many amazing things that a teenage girl only dreams of, and I feel very blessed to have been given this once in a lifetime opportunity. I thank PacSun, Kendall and Kylie Jenner and everyone else who coordinated this amazing, memorable trip for me! It truly was a dream come true!" LaCroix — "Hands down, this was one of the most memorable vacations of my life thus far. Being able to travel New York City with my best friend was priceless. I have no doubt that this won't be that last time New York City is graced with our presence! But most of all we praise God for continuously providing for us and showing us his love in mysterious ways!"
