Chitravina N. Ravikiran, an Indian vocalist, instrumentalist and composer, performed for students Sept. 18.
Twenty students participated in the 2013 Wisconsin Leaders of Tomorrow Workshop. The school took two of the five awards given. Nikita Sood placed first in the professional resume category and Rishi Sachdev was runner up for the 2013 Leadership of Tomorrow Workshop in St. Louis.
The fourth-graders completed a leaf classification project. Students had to collect and identify simple, compound and needle leaves and create a booklet. Fifth-graders are studying digestion and the circulatory system. Both classes enjoyed a visit from a missionary visiting from Tanzania.
Nine members of the senior class are National Merit Semifinalists: Stephen Browne, Sriyani Diaz-Granados, Katherine Hartmann, Kathryn Hoaglund, Kathryn Horneffer, Tessa Meurer, Akshaya Trivedi, Mihir Trivedi and Alex Wang. Furthermore, five seniors are National Merit Commended Scholars: Archit Baskarn, Brynna Conway, Jacob Fostner, Caroline Hildedbrand and Matthew Verish. Recognition for these great achievements is based on these students' performance on the PSAT exam.
Muffins with Mom with be held in the cafeteria at 7:45 a.m. Sept. 26.
Parents can nominate a child to be reviewed for the gifted and talented program. Forms are available in the office and should be returned by Sept. 24. Gifted and talented students are those who are capable of demonstrating exceptional performance in one or more of the following areas: academic, creative thinking, leadership and visual/performing arts.
Fourth-graders in Jill Frydach's class will be writing daily during "Writer's Workshop" time in the classroom. They will explore genres of writing and study the craft of well-known authors to improve their own writing skills.
The fifth- and sixth-graders went to the Indian Summer Festival at the lakefront Sept. 6. Students learn about Native Americans in fourth- and fifth-grades so this was a supplement to what they had learned earlier.
Immanuel Lutheran School begins the school year with 245 students in 3-year-old kindergarten through grade eight. The sports program has begun with football, volleyball and cross country practices. The music program has begun with band lessons and choir rehearsals.
Principal Mike Sereno and Associate Principal Mark Peperkorn will eat lunch with students Friday. This is an informal way for students to get to know their principals.
The third- through eighth-graders will visit St. Josaphat Basilica on Sept. 20. In other news, St. Dominic Home & School will sponsor the first Knight Fever Dance-a-Thon on Sept. 20. This fundraiser is designed to combine physical activity, fun and students' direct involvement for major fundraising on behalf of their school.
St. John Vianney
The Faith Frontiers Courage Retreat encourages students to face social fears and peer pressure with courage and helps build their resolve to do the right thing. The retreat gave seventh- and eighth-graders an opportunity to develop these crucial personal and interpersonal skills just as they are set to enter the broader world of high school and beyond.
St. Mary's Visitation
Students will join the School Sisters of Notre Dame for the World Day of Peace Service on Sept. 19.
The PTO is sponsoring Kids with Kick after school on Thursdays.
In art, all students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, fibers and printmaking. Students will work on creative problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Students also will learn about contemporary artists, historical artists, authors/illustrators and make connections to classroom curriculum.
The school has a new club — Supernova — where art and science collide. The goal of the club is help students gain a better appreciation of art by investigating the science behind artistic creations.
