More than 500 grandparents attended Grandparents Day on Oct. 11, complete with a breakfast and special presentation of music and recitations. Grandparents also visited classrooms with their grandchildren to observe what and how they are learning.
Nine seniors were named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program: Anthony Fung, Tyler Gray-Hoehn, Kristen Hlava, Leah Lee, Deborah Ziu, Lauren Locante, Dolan McGuire, Michael Nattinger and Jeffrey Teng.
Students, staff, alumni and local community leaders attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the school's new additions of a classroom, gymnasium and a music and learning lab space. Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto and Rep. Dale Kooyenga attended the event, which was held Oct. 11.
Nine members of the senior class have earned the distinction of National Merit semifinalist for the 2013-14 school year. Those seniors are Stephen Browne, Alexander Wang, Akshaya Trivedi, Katherine Hartman, Tessa Meurer, Sriyani Diaz-Granados, Kathryn Horneffer, Mihir Trivedi and Kathryn Hoaglund.
Sara Field has recently taken the reins as library assistant. Field has previously served the school on the Parent Teacher Organization and has served as an active volunteer for her children, now in seventh grade at Wisconsin Hills and in first and fifth grade at Brookfield Elementary.
This year, the school is using "Words Their Way" for word study in kindergarten through fifth grade. The program replaces the former spelling program.
The school is offering dads a chance to participate in a study of involvement by dads in their child's studies. A link to the short questionnaire is on the Dixon web page.
Elm Grove Lutheran
On Oct. 8, students had a surprise fire drill and gathered on the parking lot to find fire trucks and ambulances there as part of Fire Safety Week. They were able to tour the trucks, go into the rescue squad and watch Principal Jeff Fick go up on the high extension ladder.
The Kiwanis Club of Elm Grove Golden K and Fairview South students gather last week on the playground for a presentation of iPads to select students. The Kiwanis have generously donated iPads in the past to FVS students.
Pilgrim Park will host an all-school assembly featuring Brooks Gibbs, a nationally recognized youth motivational speaker and bullying expert. The presentation, sponsored by The Office Depot Foundation, will take place the afternoon of Oct. 22.
St. John Vianney
Students collected gently worn winter coats for the Coats for Kids drive. The third-grade class designed the posters and organized the coats. The coats will be distributed to those in need in our community.
St. Mary's Visitation
Junior high students have been scoping out all sorts of new information in their science classes. The eighth-graders focused on types of telescopes and how they work; seventh-graders looked at all different wavelengths that could be seen using spectroscopes; and fifth-graders are using the school's new microscopes to learn about cells.
The kindergartners have been reading the book, "The Little Engine That Could" and had the opportunity to see the book come to life at the Sharon Lynn Wilson Center for the Arts on Oct. 10. It was exciting for students to be part of the play by encouraging the Little Engine with the words, "I think I can!"
Due to the many district initiatives currently taking place, the related requirements on teachers' expertise and instructional time, and concerns expressed by a few parents, the school has decided to end the Growing Minds program for now. Moving forward, the school will work together with parents and teachers to adopt and adapt a program that meets the needs of the Tonawanda community and to keep the best interests of the children in mind.
