Patriotism abounds in Brookfield

June 30, 2014

The city of Brookfield will turn up the Patriotism this Friday as it joins the rest of America in celebrating Independence Day.

Activities will kick off at 10 a.m. with the traditional Fourth of July parade. The parade will begin on Gebhardt Road and its route will see the convoy proceed west to Calhoun Road. It will turn right and head north before turning west on North Ave. and then heading back south on Norhardt Drive. The march will end at the intersection of Norhardt and Civic Drive.

The 2014 parade is currently full. Participants wishing to take part in the 2015 parade should check with city officials in the fall.

The Independnce Day Activities Committee is requesting that parade spectators refrain from obstructing or attempting to reserve any public right of way, such as pathways or medians, by placing chairs, blankets, tents or any other item along the parade route prior to 7 p.m. July 3. No items may be placed on median strips until 7 a.m. on the day of the parade. In addition, the committee strongly discourages large items that could obstruct the view of other spectators.

Following the parade, the Civic Plaza will host its annual city-wide ice cream social. The event will feature ice cream and lemonade while also hosting a flag raising ceremony and other entertainment.

The evening of Independence Day continues the packing of patriotism into the twilight, as Family Fest will be in full swing at Mitchell Park from 6 to 9 p.m. This annual pre-fireworks event features family-friendly activities such as games, bouncing inflatables, face painting and a variety of food and entertainment.

Special features of Family Fest include "David Seebach — Wonders of Magic Show," "The Truly Remarkable Loon — A Comedy Juggling Show," and more. Guests are invited to set up for picnics and all kinds of family fun as they countdown to the finale of the fourth.

Finally, festivities will conclude as is only appropriate: Fireworks. The annual display will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. at Mitchell Park. Attendees are recommended to arrive early in order to find optimal parking opportunities.
