Great Lakes-themed entertainment spices up fish fry dinner

Money raised for woman's club

The Elm Grove Woman's Club has cast its lines out, hoping its catch of Great Lakes-inspired art and entertainment will be the perfect complement to a Silver Spur fish fry.

Proceeds from the Something Fishy in the Grove fundraiser, from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 30 at the group's clubhouse, will benefit the club's charitable contributions to local organizations and causes and help it pay for its clubhouse's new roof.

The evening will kick off with a 6 p.m. social hour featuring snacks and a wine, beer and soda cash bar.

Chris Winters, a Milwaukee author and photographer specializing in Great Lakes maritime subjects, will display photos - including some from the five years he spent aboard one of the oldest operational freight ships in the world, the S.S. St. Mary's Challenger - during the social hour, said club member Connie Kreif, who is spearheading the event.

Dinner, catered by the Silver Spur, will begin at 7 p.m. Guests can opt for baked or fried cod with potato pancakes or French fries and family-style helpings of applesauce, coleslaw, rye bread and rolls. Dessert will be cherry and apple strudel from Great Harvest.

Folksinger Lee Murdock will explore Great Lakes history through a mix of traditional sailing and work songs and original compositions at 8 p.m.

"It's all stories of how some of the ships went down and about the different ships," Kreif said, adding that the singer just might call for some audience participation.

Murdock has been performing for more than 30 years, and, in fact, it was after seeing one of his concerts that Kreif got the inspiration for Something Fishy in the Grove.
