Mrs. Sippy's to add food to offerings in Elm Grove
New Berlin location to close in months, owner says
A New Berlin coffee shop is looking to relocate and expand in Elm Grove.
Mrs. Sippy's Coffee is planning to move into the Autumn Grove Plaza at 12862 W. Bluemound Road. The Plan Commission has approved the proposal, but the Village Board will need to green light a conditional-use permit for the project before it can move forward.
That action is likely later this month.
Mrs. Sippy's owner Carol Svehlek said the café's current property, on Coffee Road off of National Avenue in New Berlin, is about half the size of the Elm Grove site. In addition, a scheduled road widening in New Berlin will cause the business to lose seven parking spots.
"From what I understand, a lot of people are looking forward to it," Svehlek said of the move. "They just want someplace to come and relax, and that's what my place is."
While the business will continue to provide the gamut of coffee selections once in Elm Grove, Mrs. Sippy's also will venture into the world of food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner service is anticipated, and a patio will give guests the option to enjoy their food and drinks outdoors.
Svehlek said the menu will include deli sandwiches, as well as hamburgers and other grilled items.
The business was granted a liquor permit that will allow it to sell beer and wine for consumption in the Elm Grove café, in April.
"I've been asked by many, many, many people in Elm Grove that I do that (sell beer and wine by the glass)," Svehlek said.
She also plans to offer free Wi-Fi in the café.
"There aren't a lot of coffee places around there (Autumn Grove) … and there are a lot of businesses nearby," she said. "There'll be a lot of potential people eating there."
Svehlek said her current clientele is excited to see the new, expanded shop.
"They won't be able to make it there as often, but we will be open later (than we are currently)," she said.
Mrs. Sippy's is planned to be operational in Elm Grove by July, but, Svehlek said, there's the possibility it could open in June if all inspections are completed in time. She estimates it will take about two weeks to move all the equipment from New Berlin to Elm Grove after closing the former location.
