Just as all successful athletic teams rely on the guidance and support of a coach, a local entrepreneur believes that businesses could gain from having a dedicated instructor on their side.

"The sports analogy also applies to the business world," said Tom Palzewicz, co-owner, along with his brother, Jim, and Chris Carman, of ActionCoach of Elm Grove. "A good coach can help a business reach its potential."

Established in 2004, the Las Vegas-based franchise employs six certified business coaches, who cater to a clientele of over 100 small-to-medium sized companies in southeastern Wisconsin.

Chris and the Palzewicz brothers brought a varied and comprehensive business background to ActionCoach — the same qualities that they look for in their coaching staff.

"Our coaches have to be well-rounded, with an understanding of sales, operations and finance," said Tom, who previously worked in corporate banking. "They must also resist the temptation to run their clients' business for them. Our job is teach owners to fish, not fish for them."

ActionCoaches and their clients begin the business-building process by developing a comprehensive, strategic growth plan, then meeting weekly to ensure that it remains on course.

"Starting a business and growing it require entirely different skill sets," said Tom. "Oftentimes, a business gets off to a good start and then plateaus because the owner tends to take on too much responsibility. We focus on having the owner — a plumber, for example — stop being a plumber and concentrate instead on hiring and training other plumbers, delegating more authority, so the business can grow again."

Recently, ActionCoach employed a coach of its own — company founder Brad Sugars.

"Brad is making sure we stick to our original vision of being a 50-coach firm," said Tom. "In the near future, we'll add two more coaches and then open offices in Pewaukee, Racine/Kenosha, Milwaukee and Mequon. There are 13,000 southeastern Wisconsin businesses in our database who need a coach, so we know there's a market that can support our services.

"We look forward to helping even more business owners reach their goals."
