An electrical issue with a sign led to a fire that caused $7,000 in structural damages to a storefront at the Plaza on Bluemound early Wednesday morning, according to the City of Brookfield Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to an alarm in the shopping center at the southeast corner of Bluemound and Calhoun roads about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the incident report:
Firefighters found the wood and aluminum awning above Brookfield Cleaners was ablaze, and that fire had broken through the fascia where an electric sign was mounted.
The sprinkler system had been automatically activated and helped suppress the fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining fire with about 200 gallons of water.
Brookfield Cleaners and the UPS Store were damaged by smoke and water; however, the extent of the damage is unknown. Structural damage to the building is estimated at $7,000.
Fire Chief Charlie Myers said it appears an electrical issue with the sign caused the fire.
Myers added that this situation is a great example of how sprinklers prevent fires from progressing.
