The following students have been named National Merit Semifinalists: Luc Boyce, Wauwatosa; Michael Courchaine, Sussex; Pater Gardner, Brookfield; Gabriella Gastevich, Elm Grove; Maria Hughes, Pewaukee; Arek Kashian, Muskego; Mary Liz Kim, Brookfield; Alison Sharpless, Elm Grove; Mahalia Sobhani, Brookfield; Andrea Sommer, Brookfield; and Regine Torres, New Berlin. Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April.
The Elmbrook School District approved the assignment of Jain Apple and Ann Smith as health room assistants.
The school's 12th annual Eagle Open Golf Outing was held Sept. 15 at Western Lakes Golf Club. The event included a pig roast for families. In other news, kindergartners took a trip to Apple Holler to wrap up their study of apples. They enjoyed a hayride and then made homemade applesauce with the apples they harvested from the trip.
The Elmbrook School District approved the assignment of Jason Eisenman as student supervisor.
The Elmbrook School District approved the following staff assignments at the school: Nicole Krebs and Sarah Martin, special education assistants; and Nancy Ruiz, library media assistant.
Fifth-graders have been immersing themselves in environmental science. Just a short bus ride away, behind Brookfield East High School, is the Nature Center pond. Students donned boots and picked up nets to search the pond for tadpoles, frogs and water bugs
The Elmbrook School District approved the assignment of Vicky Sirny as library media assistant.
The school welcomes new teachers Kerrie Roesler, seventh grade; Pam Ganswindt, third grade; and LeBree Barclay, sixth grade. In other news, students in third through eighth grades will participate in the Feed My Starving Children food packing event Sept. 21 at Brookfield Lutheran. The school will celebrate and host Amy Wymier's 25th anniversary as a teacher with an outdoor dinner Sept. 30. Wymier teaches eighth grade and science.
The Elmbrook School District approved the assignment of Nicole Croisant and Marissa Fenton as special education assistants and Collette Cottreau as job coach.
Pilgrim Park Middle School
The Elmbrook School District approved the assignment of Robert Kuhnen as special education assistant. In other news, the boy's 2012 afterschool lacrosse program began Sept. 13 and will run each Thursday through Oct. 18. The program is an opportunity for students to try a new sport or for experienced players to perfect their skills. Equipment is available for rental. With the support of families, students and staff, the school has been named the 2012 Red Robin Foundation U-ACT Champion School. It is recognition for establishing a "kindness team" that led monthly kindness challenges. The school received a $7,500 grant as its prize.
St. John Vianney
The reading and language arts program first introduced last year is in full swing with the introduction this year of a full-time reading teacher and part-time learning resource teacher. Both are visiting classrooms to assist with the Houghton Mifflin Journeys reading program. The program also includes an online component accessible to families.
St. Mary's Visitation
Students will join the School Sisters of Notre Dame on Sept. 21 for a Peace Day prayer service. The prayer service is in recognition of the International Day of Peace established by the United Nations and is observed as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.
The Elmbrook School District approved the assignment of Karen Kayak as special education assistant, Carla Farman as library media assistant and Jeanne Gagliano as kindergarten assistant.
Fifth-grade students learned about fire safety Sept. 19 when they visited the Survive Alive house at the Brookfield Safety Building.
Wisconsin Hills Middle School
The Elmbrook School District approved the following special education assistants assigned to the school: Kristi Harder, Brenda Lopresti, Sarah Kennedy, Danielle Strigenz, Ilse Frayer and March Schmitz.
