Packers, Edvest, libraries team up to offer scholarships

June 11, 2014

Leap Into Reading for your chance to win a $1,000 Edvest scholarship and four tickets to Green Bay Packers.

As another school year draws to an end, children look forward to a summer free of homework and full of fun, which also means opportunities to read all of the favorite books they were too busy to read during the school year. Every summer, libraries across the country promote summer reading programs that keep children reading all summer long as they strive to fulfill specific goals. This year, several organizations in Wisconsin have joined together to give students even more incentive to participate in library summer reading programs, with some great prizes up for grabs.

Edvest, the tax-free college savings plan offered by the State of Wisconsin, has teamed up with the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Library System to offer an easy way to win a $1,000 scholarship for your child, in addition to two tickets to the Green Bay Packers' annual family night celebration, taking place on Saturday, August 3.

The highlights of the contest are as follows:

• The contest begins on June 6 and ends July 20.

• Parents, grandparents or a child's guardian may register one child per entry and only children ages 0-14.

• Entry forms will be available in the library beginning June 6, or online at www.edvest.com/reading.

• The official drawing will take place on or around July 23. One grand-prize winner will be drawn from each of the 17 regional library systems, as well as 3 at-large grand-prize winners (20 total).

• Each winner receives a $1,000 Edvest Scholarship and 4 tickets to the Packers Family Night Game (or a $30 Packers Pro Shop gift card if they do not wish to receive the tickets).

• In order to enter, child must be participating in a 2014 Summer Reading Program. Completion of the Summer Reading Program is not required to win.

Edvest is a tuition program administered by the State of Wisconsin that helps families invest in one of their most important financial goals — their children's education. With EdVest, your contributions are placed in a customizable trust fund designed specifically for the program, and the earnings grow tax-free. When your beneficiary is ready to go to college, the funds are then available to be used for higher education costs. In addition, for 2014 you can deduct up to $3,050 per beneficiary on your Wisconsin income taxes.

Edvest will also be holding a series of random drawings at the beginning of June in which selected public libraries will receive autographed Packer footballs and tickets to the family night game. Last year, the Elm Grove Public Library received 4 family night tickets and a football autographed by Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy to give away.

This contest aims to raise awareness for public library summer reading programs. This year's Elm Grove Library Summer Reading program provides a great opportunity to turn your reading time into a donation for children in need in other parts of the world.

For children ages toddler through 12 years old, every 60 minutes of reading materials checked out from the Elm Grove Library counts as one reading sheet. Each reading sheet, to a maximum of 8, will count toward a donation to Heifer International, a worldwide Family Night charity aimed at ending hunger and poverty by donating livestock and sustainable living training to areas in need. Over the past 70 years, Heifer International has distributed livestock, such as goats, bees and water buffalo, to more than 20 million families in 125 countries. For teens ages 12-18, every 3 hours of reading can be counted as one reading sheet. In addition, older children can read to younger children and receive double credit. The summer reading program begins on June 16 and runs through August 15.
