Five Spartans, Lancers golfers earn GMC honors

Schlagenhauf takes conference player of the year honors

Sept. 29, 2010

Brookfield Central and Brookfield East had five golfers earn All-Greater Metro Conference honors, including the biggest honor of all.

Marissa Schlagenhauf of Central received the Greater Metro Conference player of the year award, and was joined on the first team by East's Sierah Gurske.

"We've had several players of the year over the years," Central coach Brian Scrobel said. "But Marissa was playing well at the end of the year, and was really focused Monday (she shot a 39 and was medalist at the final mini-meet). She went from third place to first, and then was steady on Thursday."

East's Sarah Hepperla was second team, and Christine Tang of Central and Kristy Stevlingson of East earned third-team honors.

Divine Savior Holy Angels won the GMC Championship Tournament on Sept. 23 at Broadlands with a 331. Central and East tied for second (366), but East won the tie-breaker. Wauwatosa (378), Sussex Hamilton (384) and Menomonee Falls (426) rounded out the scoring.

The tie-breaker came when East's fifth scorer, Katie Hartman, shot a personal best 99, beating out Central's fifth scorer by three strokes.

"It was amazing," East coach Chris Minchk said of Hartman. "That was her personal best by, like, 15 strokes."

Gurske (82, second), Hepperla (93), Selina Shannon (95) and Stevlingson (96) led East, while Schlagenhauf (81, medalist), Anne Parker (92), Tang (93), Arie Goodman (100) and Amanda Reisner (102) played well for the Lancers.

East and Central tied for second in their final GMC mini-meet Sept. 20 at North Hills and finished the regular season in second and third places.

East and Central finished 10th and 11th in Saturday's 23-team Oconomowoc invite, scoring 358 and 363.
