Brookfield Central senior Richie Smeltzer won a Greater Metro Conference title at 285 pounds to highligaht the Lancers' performance at the league tournament at West Allis Central on Feb. 6.
Smeltzer, last year's champion, received a bye, won a 4-3 decision over Marquette's Mike Brennan in the semifinals and then beat Menomonee Falls' Jake Hoerchner, 6-1, in the title match.
"He has tough competition ahead, so this was a good test for him," Central coach Jim Fuchs said.
Central's Dryden Holmes reached the finals at 140 but lost there, 9-2, to Brookfield East's Joey Woppert.
"(Holmes) has been wrestling well the last couple of weeks and his focus is good going into regionals," Fuchs said.
Junior Tyler Veling was third at 152. He defeated Marquette's Jonathan Bleach, 8-6, in the third-place match.
Freshman Nic Veling placed fourth; he fell to West Allis Hale's Matt Letizia, 10-5, in his final match.
Junior Tommy Bucholtz was fifth at 145.The Lancers, who finished last in the team standings, took only five wrestlers to the tournament. Fuchs let the less experienced wrestlers compete at the junior varsity conference meet instead of being overwhelmed against varsity foes.
"It turned out to be the right decision," Fuchs said. "We ended up second even with some of our guys having to wrestle each other because of how the bracketing worked out."
