Central 8th-grade boys win state basketball tournament
The Brookfield Central 8th-grade boys basketball defeated Oshkosh North to win the Large Community Division of the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in Stevens Point on March 27-28.
Central is coached by Donne Robbins, assistant coaches Aaron Hurley and Joey D'Amato. Elijah Goodman and Riley LaChance of Brookfield Central were named to the All-Tournament team for the Large Division group.
Central defeated Appleton East (66-47), Bay Port (64-49) and Verona Area (45-41) in pool play; Holmen (56-55) in the second round, Germantown (56-43) in the quarterfinals and Oshkosh North (41-40) for the title.
Central 7th-grade cagers eighth in state tournament
The Brookfield Central 7th grade boys basketball team finished eighth in the Large Community Division of the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in La Crosse on March 27-28.
Central beat DePere (31-28) and Watertown (42-34) in Pool Play, La Crosse Central (51-27) in round two, Marshfield (54-28) in round three before losing to Germantown (47-41) and Neenah (52-43).
The Central team is coached by Tim Oleszuzk. Griffin Oleszuzk of Brookfield Central was named to the All-Tournament team for the Large Division group.
Bruisers girls rugby team takes first place in Ruggerfest
The Brookfield Bruisers, a high school girls' rugby team with players from Brookfield Central, Brookfield East and Tosa West, took first place in the girls' division of the 62nd annual Gateway Ruggerfest on April 10-11 in St. Louis, Mo.
The Bruisers defeated the Kansas City Dragons, 51-5 and 27-5.
They also defeated another team on their way to the final game, which they won by forfeit when Catholic Memorial (Waukesha) left the tournament early.
Stars' Rogers named first-team all-state in hockey
Sophomore Brandt Rogers of Brookfield East, who is a member of the Brookfield Stars co-op hockey team, was named to the WEHL All-State first team last month.
One other local player is also included on team - Junior Aaron Storch of Elm Grove, who is a member of the University School of Milwaukee.
New Berlin Birdies seeking summer league participants
The New Berlin Birdies are recruiting new members for their Summer 2010 Nine Holes Women's Golf League.
The league plays on Tuesday mornings, beginning May 25 through Aug. 24 at New Berlin Hills Golf Course, 13175 W. Graham St. The league is a relaxed, fun recreational league. Call Denise (League president) at (262) 782-1116 or Debbie Smith at (843) 685-9145.
