Stars' hockey coach resigns
The Elmbrook School District has accepted the resignation of head hockey coach Matt Shapiro.
Shapiro has been the head coach for three seasons following one year as the head JV coach in Elmbrook. Under his leadership the Brookfield Stars have become an extremely competitive program, challenging some of the top-rated teams in the Milwaukee area.
The team has won its own Turcott Cup in 2008 and 2010. Highlights from the 2009-10 season included a win over defending state champion Arrowhead and a 5-2 win over long-time rival Marquette on the road.
"The decision process has been very tough and it's hard to leave something I've been so close to," Shapiro said. "As I have decided to leave and focus on the beginning stages of my career, I would like to thank both schools, both athletic departments, the Brookfield hockey families, my staff, and most importantly the kids."
East athletic director Corey Golla spoke highly of Shapiro's performance.
"Coach Shapiro has led the program with hard work, character, and a love for Brookfield hockey," he said. "It is difficult to replace coaches with that passion."
The position will be posted immediately. Qualified candidates can contact Todd Sobrilsky at Brookfield Central.
