EWI of Milwaukee Awards Scholarships to Local Students

June 4, 2012

Executive Women International (EWI) of Milwaukee awarded scholarships to three local high school seniors and three local adult students at a first-ever joint celebration on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee West.

EWI of Milwaukee hosts two annual scholarship competitions:
-The EWI Scholarship Program (EWISP) is open to high school seniors in public, private and parochial schools in the five-county Southeastern Wisconsin region.
-The Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) program is open to adults facing economic, social or physical challenges, who are looking to improve their situations through education.

A crowd made up of more than 80 scholarship finalists, teachers, parents and EWI® members gathered for the ASIST & EWISP Scholarship Awards Dinner hosted by Andy Tarnoff, co-founder/owner of OnMilwaukee.com. Megan Harney, owner of The Scholar’s Choice, LLC – and first-place EWISP recipient in 2003 – gave the evening’s invocation.

Milwaukee college, business and civic leaders selected the scholarship recipients; applicants are judged on scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, good citizenship and involvement in extra-curricular activities.

EWISP Awards:
Judges included Gayla Jenkins, Financial Aid Advisor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Candace Walton, Director of Corporate, Foundation & Community Gifts and Planned Giving at the American Red Cross in Southeastern Wisconsin; and Dan Goyette, Director of Financial Aid at Alverno College.

Serving his 32nd year as head judge for the Milwaukee EWISP, Dan Goyette announced the three EWISP award recipients:

First Place: Monica Rose Peppel, Brookfield Academy ($3,000 award)
Second Place: Athylia Paremski, Franklin High School ($2,000 award)
Third Place: Spencer Ten Haken, Sheboygan County Christian High School ($1,000 award)

ASIST Awards:
Judges included David Zych, Director of Financial Analytics, The Krizek Group; Danae Davis, CEO of PEARLS for Teen Girls, Inc.; and Mary Beth Malm, Nonprofit Management Excellence Consultant at MBM Consulting.

Danae Davis announced the three ASIST award recipients:

First Place: Marieme Ndiaye, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ($3,000 award)
Second Place: Margaret Martinez, Mount Mary College ($2,000 award)
Third Place: Deborah Anderson, Bryant & Stratton College ($1,000 award)

EWI of Milwaukee’s First Place winners will advance to compete in the national competition. Scholarships of up to $10,000 will be awarded at the Executive Women International® Leadership Conference & Annual Meeting in September.
